theme 3: after seminar

After the lecture and seminar, i may conclude that there are alot of definitions to theory depends on which context we are looking at. theory is difficult to define in a general term. it can be a 'statement to identify object' or 'connection between phenomena explaining what where when why how' or in scientific way, it is 'cause of logic between events and effects'.

In the seminar, we discussed mainly about what is Theory ? and what is Hypothesis ? and what's the differences ?

Hypothesis is one of the tools to get to theory. Hypothesis is a prediction that one can make consumption of things base on experiences or a synthetic knowledge or even make a hypothesis base on the other theories. For example hypothesis could be 'an apple falls under the tree because of the wind' then through the experiments we can prove it whether right or wrong and finally come up with theory.

I raised a question that does every theory has to have a hypothesis?  because on my pre-blog, the researcher doesn't make any prediction but just collection data from other research and conclude his new findings. the answer i got from Ilias is 'no' theory doesn't always have to include hypothesis. it just that hypothesis is one way to lead to theory. Ilias also add up to our group discussion that analysis is the fundamental to create theory.

I find one an interesting question in our seminar was that "why did the question 'what is man' was raised in the lecture". the answer we got was because there is no complete answer to it. it seems just like 'Theory'. the answer depends on context of places and time.

  1. Hej,
The paper you read for this topic, about the CAPTCHA research, is actually the first one I came across now which gives me the impression that it could also be useful for us personally - interesting choice! What do you feel after reading it completely?
Your comment about the seminar you were in actually helped me a lot in differentiating between theory and hypothesis! That a hypothesis can lead to a theory, but that a theory does not necessarily need to be built on a hypothesis, thanks for sharing that! In our seminar we had the example that a hypothesis is "the first puzzle piece" for a theory, but I hadn't understood before that this piece is not even required.

  2. Hi,
We didn’t talk in our seminar about hypothesis. It was nice to read about it and how it is linked to the theory. So hypothesis is a way to construct theory, but not all theories constructed with the use of a hypothesis. Also, theory is not a hypothesis as a detective could say, theory is about explaining why something is happening, is the connection between phenomena, and theory can be built on other theories or in contrast to them.
Thank you for sharing the answer to the question about what is a man. I was thinking the same, how this question is relative to our theme and why we spent so much time on time. I didn’t ask Ilias about it because I thought that it would be silly, but seems that other students had the same question. Now I get the point of that discussion!

  3. Hi! You mentioned interesting point that hypothesis is not always part of theory. I thought that hypothesis is inherent part of theory. Basically there were 1 or more hypothesis in all research papers that I came across. Now the definition of hypothesis and its relation to theory is clear for me. Thank you for that.

  4. Hi~
Thank you for your reflections! You succeeded in explaining the week's main achievements with the help of a clear structure shaping your thoughts. You raised a question that does every theory has to have a hypothesis, I agree with the answer because theory can also be concluded from prior experience. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Hi!
Enjoyed reading your post on theme 3! You have managed to grasp the key concepts of this theme really well. A good quote from Leifs lecture is "A theory is a set of propositions that aims to identify (abstract) objects and their relation to each other.". I also had troubles understanding the point of the "what is man" question during the lecture but after a while I connected it to that quote. By this I mean that the point was that a theory is just a set of propositions and that question raised just that, a set of propositions. Thanks for sharing, keep it up!!

  6. Hi,
your post is very impressed me, cause you gave your groups discussion and opinions which is not mentioned in my groups, for example the analysis is the fundamental to create theory which i spent time to think and final realize that for part of my thought in what is theory can just with this sentence to summarize. You also have a good explaination of what is hypothesis, i have no doubt for that.

  7. I agree, it is difficult to define what theory is. As the matte of fact, it is easier to say what a theory is not than what it is. However, I like the way you described what theory was. I think you have mentioned some very interesting concepts regarding theory, such as: “Hypothesis is one of the tools to get to theory” or we could say that theory is a mean of rejecting or proving a hypothesis . I like the final paragraph where you mention that theory is time and context dependent. I think that is very important to realize about theory. What could be true here and now, may no be true 100 years form now in another place. I totally agree with that.

    Good job! Cheers!

  8. Hi,
Thanks for sharing. I like your explain that hypothesis is one of the tools to get to theory. Hypothesis is a prediction that one can make consumption of things base on experiences or a synthetic knowledge or even make a hypothesis base on the other theories. And the example of "an apple falls under the tree because of the wind" is a simple hypothesis is easy for me to understand. Good reflection!
